Architecture can move you.

In 2023, Barcelona will commemorate 100 years since Domènech i Montaner’s death by hosting a year of educational and cultural programming. Domènech was a renowned Catalan architect, writer, politician, and historian. He was one of the founders of the Art Nouveau movement in Spain, called Modernisme.

Adding to the programming of this watershed event, filmmaker Stacey Menchel Kussell is creating a new film to provide a unique opportunity for audiences to experience Domènech’s architecture through cinema and dance. The filming will take place during 2023 and the premiere will serve as part of the final series of publications and exhibitions that close out the honorary year.

A cinematic hybrid of dance and non-fiction documentary, the film will celebrate the exultant architecture of Catalan Modernist Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

The film will allow audiences to experience Domènech i Montaner’s dynamic Art Nouveau masterpieces in living, breathing performance. The five buildings featured in the film, a wide range of structures from a glamorous hotel to a hospital for the underprivileged, are highlights of Domènech’s prolific career, and showcase his variety of design and purpose. He combines fantasy and pragmatism in his buildings, allowing those who enter to find whimsicality in the everyday.
